THE VILLAGE PLAYERS of Dignity Village are traveling on tour with their hit play: "The Filmore Hotel" throughout Oregon and Washington in September and October. They will be at Reed College on September 29 at 8 pm in the Eliot Hall Chapel.
The play takes place in a low income hotel by the sea. When the building is sold, residents are issued 30 day eviction notices, and a close-knit community of retirees, artists, Vietnam vets, and motel maids must hit the streets to make way for a gentrified "haven for those with plenty of havens".
When the play opened to a one night only performance on May 29th at the Pine Street Theater, the packed house cheered, cried, laughed, and jumped to its feet in a standing ovation.
From a review in the Portland Indy News Media (July 14, 2004: Activism Through Powerful Performance Art): "The Filmore Hotel", performed by the Village Players theatre troupe, is an incredible example of activism through performance art. I encourage the community to witness history in the making and I highly recommend that you take a friend, maybe even a business acquaintance, to go see it. You may both encounter a message so powerful that it changes your lives."
Following each performance, the players will facilitate an interactive Q and A with the audience. All members of the cast are current or former residents of Dignity Village, the homeless encampment known internationally as home to pioneers of a visionary, and controversial, solution to homelessness.
